Whatever God Says

Whatever God Says

In 1999, Steven Curtis Chapman released the album Speechless and on it, the song Whatever. In the song, the singer understands that God isn’t as interested in our opinion of his ways. We often want God to give us a job we love with money and people we love. We want the government to be bigger, but cost less. And we want what we want whenever we want it.

The singer realizes God wants us to do whatever he says. God calls us to do whatever.

His mother said to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it,” John 2:5.

Before Jesus public ministry begins, he attends a wedding with his family. The host runs out of wine, which was a big deal in this environment. Jesus has been asked by his mother to fix the situation. But without even a positive response from Jesus, Mom tells the servants the quote above.

For a Specific Purpose

God created us for his reasons and according to his plans. You may believe we are all an accident or a coincidence, but I believe God has a specific purpose for each one of us. God didn’t create a finished earth, but an unfinished one. God left centuries of work for us. We needed to invent, discover, and create “stuff.” We find new uses for things that have existed and we create new things all the time. It took centuries to get around to inventing the printing press, and now anyone can publish content all over the globe instantly.

God made us and then assigned each of us to our time and place. He has work for us (Ephesians 2:10) and our best life takes place within that purpose and destiny. When I let my mind imagine the most powerful, all-knowing being I can imagine, I understand a tiny bit about what he can do. Then, I realize that, in the end, Jesus’ mom was right. We will see cool things happen when we do whatever Jesus says to us. It just happens.

I wondered what it would be like to do a word study in the Bible of places where the term “whatever” is used. The term is used 160 times in 148 verses in the NASB. Many don’t seem to make a particular statement, but I have found a few that I want to write about.

This is the first in a series on the term, “whatever.” Check out the others here.
