Seek One Thing: To Be With Jesus

Seek One Thing: To Be With Jesus

In the last post, I wrote about Rich Mullins’ song My One Thing. It was first released on the album, Never Picture Perfect. On some of my Rich Mullins albums, they used to reference Bible verses with each song. I didn’t own this album or physical versions of any of his music any more, so I don’t know what verse they referenced with this song. But it may have been Psalm 27:4 –

“One thing I have asked from the Lord, that I shall seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the Lord And to meditate in His temple.”

Could we say that we only want one thing? As a member of the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, having received the benefit of thousands of years of progress, I can want more than one thing in the span of a sentence or a thought. But what do I really want?

Do you remember Miss Congeniality starring Sandra Bullock? In this movie, the joke was that every contestant really wanted world peace. I have a friend who always liked to provide the Sunday-school answer to questions. Often he will answer all kinds of questions with “Jesus.”

While Jesus may be the Sunday school answer, dwelling with Jesus “all the days of my life” is what this psalmist claims as his one thing.

What Is Your One Thing?

Do we really want to dwell with Jesus? Do we want to spend all of our time in his presence? Could it be that we don’t experience Jesus’ presence all day, every day, because we really don’t want him around? Maybe we don’t want Jesus to see how we think or what we say to our coworkers. Or, maybe we don’t want the Lord to look at us the way he looked at Peter after Peter denied knowing Him a third time.

What do you want? Tell yourself, and the Lord, the truth. And ask Jesus to help you if you, like me, can’t honestly say that dwelling with Jesus all day every day is my one thing.

This is the second post in a series on the phrase “one thing.” Check them all out here.
