Rest Your Soul While You Work

By Mike Henry Sr.

What does it take for your soul to rest? Do you ever rest your soul? I often think about work even when I’m not working. Or I think about finances or about something. I almost never do nothing. Do you?

When you’re alone, thinking, what do you think about? Do you ever wonder why you do what you do? What motivates you to act? Do you pursue instant gratification? Do you pursue happiness? Do you worry? Do you avoid, plan, scheme? What thoughts gain your focus when you’re free to think about anything?

“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. “For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NASB

I’d like my mind to go to Jesus. Jesus claims when we’re working with him, we can find rest for our souls. Do you spend any of your thought life there?

Rather than wondering what’s on TV, what would Jesus like me to think about? Instead of obsessing over deadlines and work pressures, what does Jesus want to do and how can I join him?

Sometimes, I can just sit and think about the great things Jesus has done for me. I’ve spent some time the last few weeks thanking God for my parents. I wasn’t very thankful when I was younger. But now, I see their qualities in me. Every one of those qualities was given to me by God, who made them my parents. Handled properly, those traits the best me. Now in my last quarter, I appreciate those qualities; some I never appreciated when I was younger.

What would God have you think? What will give you the greatest joy, or sense of accomplishment for eternity? What actions can you take that will last forever? And once you know, what will you do?

I watch too many reruns and make too many trips to the kitchen. I want the Lord to show me how to rest while pursuing Him. Jesus said we would rest strapped to a plow, if we learn from him. Do I believe Jesus will give me rest when I’m yoked to him like an ox? Can I fix my mind on Jesus until I find peace and rest in my situation?

And will Jesus make that rest visible to my coworkers and community?
