Opposition

By Mike Henry Sr.

The Law of Opposition by Oswald Chambers, the December 4 entry at My Utmost for His Highest, states that all of the spiritual life is overcoming. “Life without war is impossible either in nature or in grace.” Everything about our life is a struggle against the forces that will tear us down. Years later, in The War of Art, Steven Pressfield would call this the Resistance. In the bible God calls it the world, the flesh and the devil.

Chambers points out how physical and mental health, moral virtue, and holiness are states where we balance our physical, mental moral and spiritual lives against the forces at work to tear us down. To be in shape, we resist the deterioration of our body, mind, and spirit.

“Everything outside of my physical life is designed to put me to death.” To be healthy, we must maintain a vigorous life by working out. The same is true for our mental life.

Do you sense the Resistance today? Where? As you read this, please know I prayed for you. I asked God to strengthen us as we deal with the antagonism and opposition of the world we’re in. Our God works with us. He has provided the victory. Jesus even said:

“These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NASB
