Marketplace Mission Trip FAQ Part 3

By Mike Henry Sr.

We are challenging workplace Christians to go to work like they were going on a mission trip at the end of February. We call that a marketplace mission trip. Learn more and sign up here. This is part 3 of our Frequently Asked Questions or FAQ. Check out part 1 and part 2 also.

Questions You Might Have

How do you have time for this? Maybe you have very few breaks. If you work at a fast-food restaurant or in a call center, you may have performance objectives. Simply smile and pray for everyone you meet. Ask God to show you how you can bless someone as part of your job. Work to get ahead so you can be interrupted. God is working in the life of everyone you meet. As a marketplace missionary, we only want to look for God and join him.

Do I have to “sell” people? No. I believe Jesus is powerful enough to bring people to himself. In the end, my job is simply to live according to that belief. I pray for people so I might join in on Jesus’ work. And I look for ways to go out of my way to help people because that’s what Jesus said we should do. Check out Matthew Chapter 5-7 for a lifetime’s worth of ideas. I experience joy and purpose when I intentionally follow Jesus and serve others in and through my work. Like one post I read, When Being a Missionary Means Keeping Your Job, I strive to be a missionary without quitting my job.

Do I have to tell them what Scriptures to read? If they want to know about something from the Bible, sure. But most people who don’t follow Jesus don’t think much of the Bible anyway. Jesus instructed one person to simply tell others what Jesus had done for him (Mark 5:19). If you know why you believe in Jesus, speak in the first person. Simply tell them why you believe what you believe and why you do what you do. We recommend you practice. Knowing what we believe, and why, is one of the key activities we can do as a marketplace missionary. But most people don’t care what we know until they’ve seen us care.

I’m not sure this is the right thing to do. Pass it up. Read posts about previous trips. There’s no rush. And you can do this any time. In fact, you don’t need us to schedule one. If you’d like to talk more, please schedule a call with me and let’s talk. I hope to help every workplace Christ-follower experience the joy and purpose of intentionally walking with Jesus every day. I’d love to talk.
