What’s Your Problem?

By Mike Henry Sr.

What’s your problem?

Sometimes I wonder about the work Jesus asks us to do. How much of his work do we miss; how much of the work He planned for us goes undone? Or, do we expect someone else to do it – how much do we dump off on “the church” or “a ministry” or “a minister”?  If we thought serving God was our full-time job, how much service to God would we deliver?

For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10.

I memorized Ephesians 2:8-9 when I became a Christian.  Years later, God made verse 10 resonate within me.  God created me for a specific time and place. He gave me gifts and a heritage and experiences that equipped me specifically for “good works.”  Even those works were prepared beforehand.

We have a problem.

That problem (or, more correctly, those problems) are ours to solve. The solution is the good works mentioned in Ephesians 2:10. God left the problems for us. It’s not our job to tell someone else about our problem or to ask someone else to pray for our problems.  It’s not our job to criticize the government or the church for not solving these problems. These are our problems. The solution to the problem is a good work that God “prepared” for us. Pause for a moment and let that idea sink in. God prepared a good work for you to do, a problem for you to solve.

God isn’t in the business of eliminating problems.  He’s preparing us to do good works.  He’s teeing the work up for us. God can and does solve problems.  But most often He does so by sending us.  He has a special batch of problems prepared for you.  I checked a number of translations and my Greek concordance and the Greek word translated “prepared beforehand” means just that, “to fit up in advance, ordain before, prepare afore.”

God prepared a good work for you.

It probably isn’t a pretty job, but it’s yours. That job has your name on it.  These problems, like Christmas presents, are wrapped for you with a sticker and a bow. And God waits for you to walk in the good work he has given you.

So, what is your problem? Will you unwrap it and walk in it? Or will you complain and avoid? Share your problems below and let us pray for you and even help you in your good work.

  1. My wife and have have the opportunity to minister to a friend even offering temporary housing. I feel somewhat uncomfortable with the offer and at odds with my wife on this. How can I overcome this to do God’s will and support a person in need?

    1. That sounds like a great question for God. As a husband, I try to remember my first ministry is to my wife. My relationship as a follower of Jesus makes me a minister. My first ministry is to my wife. I already made that choice. My first job is to love my wife like Christ loved the church. I don’t do a very good job, which makes saying this harder. Making a living, serving my friends, even my kids, and any other ideas I might have must either serve or follow that first commitment. Each person in the marriage then prayerfully seeks God’s direction in things we do that impact our unity.

I hope that helps. I just prayed for you, too. Mike…

  2. I feel “over tested” by God lately. I wonder if he hears me even though I know he sees my struggles right now. I can’t move forward to do any good work when I struggle with some current issues and it’s very frustrating.

    1. Lisa, I just prayed for you and will continue. I don’t know anything about your situation. But, because of what I know of God, you are not alone and He will make a way. When I’m overwhelmed by my situations, sometimes my good work needs to be that I trust Jesus and do what I can. Relaxing in Jesus is a good work, too. It says we know He is in charge and He is good. Please let me know offline if there is anything specific that I can do for you or be praying about.
