“How can we equip marketplace Christ-followers to take the good news of Jesus into their world?” Doug Pollock
I recently had the opportunity to speak with Doug Pollock, Director of Evangelism for Athletes in Action and author of God Space: Where Spiritual Conversations Happen Naturally. We were discussing how, because we have focused on other metrics in the past, we haven’t equipped many of Jesus’ followers to take him and our relationship with him into our workplaces.
Doug suggested every pastor and every person who wants to minister to believers to consider this question: “How can we equip marketplace believers to take the good news of Jesus into their world? Asked of a Christ-follower, how can we help you grow your marketplace ministry? Are you responsible for your ministry to people in the world? Jesus’ Great Commandment was that we make disciples.
“Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations,” Jesus, Matthew 28:19a
Imagine what you would do if you decided to go into business making hamburgers. You would find a supplier, pick a location, hire a staff, define the processes for making hamburgers, set the price, do the marketing, train the employees and start the business.
What would your plan be if, instead of making hamburgers, you make disciples?
What is a disciple?
The simple answer is: someone who follows Jesus.
How do we make disciples? We follow Jesus in such a way that they may see our good works and follow Jesus too (Matthew 5:16). Our life should deliver the good news. What is the good news? Jesus made a way for us to take part in our eternal life today. John 10:10b, Jesus says, “I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.” If you have life, you want to give it to others. We experience joy as followers of Jesus that we didn’t experience before we followed him. And I still experience times when I don’t focus on Jesus or follow him closely, and I experience less joy. But when I follow Jesus closely, I make the eternal life he gives visible. I deliver the good news.
When you think about it, we each distribute the attitude we carry with us. If we carry joy, we distribute it. The same is true for worry, grief, or anger. If peace and optimism from following Jesus, the same. Engage in your eternal life by following Jesus and you will find ways to deliver the good news as you go through your day.
