Creativity and Innovation – Values Part 4

By Mike Henry Sr.

At Follower of One, we value creativity and innovation when it comes to ways we make Jesus visible.

This I recall to my mind, Therefore I have hope. The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness. Lamentations 3:21-23 NASB

God daily creates new compassions. Compassion and mercy are the ways God provides for us. Every day his compassion is fresh, new. It’s not used or second-hand. He creates it new every day.

The Last Arrow by Erwin McManus at Amazon.comIn The Last Arrow: Save Nothing For The Next Life, Erwin McManus talks in detail about how he had difficulty with modern teaching in the church related to Ecclesiastes 1:9-10. From this passage, many modern believers get the idea there is nothing new under the sun. It’s stated clearly in the Bible.

I agree with McManus and his thoughts in the Last Arrow. Solomon was complaining and speaking from a cynical, sarcastic perspective in Ecclesiastes 1. For the Creator of the universe, there is nothing new.

But God creates new compassions, and mercies every day (Lamentations 3:21-23 above). God has works he has created for us (Ephesians 2:10). He is doing something new. Will you not see it? (Isaiah 43:18-19).

God has new ways for us to glorify him and to make him known. We don’t all need to stick to the old King James English and we don’t all need to follow the same sermon outlines and the sing the same worship songs. We agree with this in some areas, where we want something new, but we then freeze up in other areas. It all depends on how happy you are with the status quo.

Followers of One value an openness to new ways of serving people so God may be glorified. Does God have a new compassion for me to give? Does Jesus want me to serve others in some new and different way? The service we give to others makes Jesus visible. So we want to be open to creativity and innovation in the ways we serve.

Can you serve a coworker, friend or family member differently tomorrow as part of your full-time ministry?
