Choose to Impact Eternity

By Mike Henry Sr.

Every day we make hundreds of choices. Some may Impact eternity. We were created to choose. Every day, we can choose to join God in his work and cooperate in his plan for eternity. Or we can opt out. We discussed several ways we allow ourselves to opt out in the series I wrote on practical atheism.

Sometimes, I may think living my faith means I must do “church things.” Do I preach on Sunday or teach a Sunday school class? Maybe I could start some “ministry” or build a house or work in a homeless shelter. If I’m really spiritual, I may start a bible study at work, or travel somewhere to help people and tell them about Jesus.

What about the other parts of my life? Do you think the rest of your life doesn’t matter. Should our goal be to stay out of trouble? In the end do you live life as if your work really is something other than your faith. Work has a place, rest has a place and faith has a place, correct?

And whoever in the name of a disciple gives to one of these little ones even a cup of cold water to drink, truly I say to you, he shall not lose his reward. Matthew 10:42.

Jesus talks about rewards and says if we accept a righteous person, we receive the righteous person’s reward. And if we accept a prophet, we will receive a prophet’s reward. And if we give nothing more than a cup of cold water to a child because we are disciples of Jesus, we will receive a reward and we won’t lose it.

Whatever I do for others, because I follow Jesus, matters for a long time.

Does your faith change the way you do everything?

Jesus told us to make disciples. A disciple is an intern, a student. Giving a cup of cold water is the act of a disciple. We serve (hear “minister”) others because Jesus did and he told us to. A disciple lives with and learns from their teacher. Disciples receive an eternal reward when we do even small tasks for others because Jesus asked.

Who do you think Jesus would have you serve today? This passage doesn’t stand alone. We can be pretty foolish when it comes to what we do and say. We must respect and appreciate others. They must appreciate our action. When God blesses someone else through us, they should appreciate it. If we do something for another person and it was something they appreciated, God uses your gift to make himself known. God is able to bless others through you.

Choose to impact eternity. Ask God to show you what to do for someone and then do it. It will cost you. Can you trust God? Don’t let what you can’t do keep you from doing what you can do. There are people to bless all over the place.
