Adversity Exhibits Our True Faith

By Mike Henry Sr.

How you react to adversity, such as disagreeable or disappointing circumstances, will show your faith in Jesus. Jesus said we would be his witnesses (Acts 1:8). Our actions and reactions show our true beliefs.

When we react with hope, trusting God’s promises, we make him visible. When we react with frustration, anger, despair, or selfishness, we show everyone we don’t trust God. We don’t believe God causes all things to work together for good (Romans 8:28). We show others we don’t trust God to produce endurance in us (James 1:2-4).

But when we trust God and patiently wait for him, we show our hope in God, and we make him visible. When others see loving, patient attitudes in light of difficulty, we make God known.

The May 14, My Utmost for His Highest, by Oswald Chambers is one of my favorites. I’ve highlighted and made notes all over it. Based on a phrase at the end of 2 Corinthians 4:10, he points out how, “It is not just a question of being saved from hell, but of being saved so that ‘the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.’ And it is adversity that makes us show His life in our mortal flesh.”

Chambers asks if we show the “essence of the sweetness of the Son of God” or if we present our own selfish irritation. When I’m disappointed, too often, I whine or complain. If I have some authority, I may express frustration and become critical. I have even lost my temper and done things I’m not proud of. But over my years, God continues to work on me.

Especially when I didn’t choose the adversity, or when I didn’t originate it, if I can trust God, I make him visible. Chambers adds, “if God puts you into adversity, He is adequately sufficient to ‘supply all your need’ (Philippians 4:19).”

What adversity do you face today? How can you respond so you make God known?

  1. Great post Mike, thank you! Your words are so true. I especially like your question at the end, “How can you respond…?” I think what you are discussing in your post is, in many respects, the difference between reacting and responding. I far too often react to things. However, when I’m plugged into the Lord, I am much more able to respond in a godly manner. Thanks again – I hope you are well!
